Digsby

Digsby does more than Pidgin. It adds social networking and email notifications. Social Networks include Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn (all of which I do not use--I'm anti-social!).

Disabling USB Drives

A more reasonable option for sysadmins is to disable write access to USB port so that data files cannot be written to the mass storage device. The USB thumb drive will be read-only.

Open the Windows Registry and open the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\ Control\StorageDevicePolicies

Now add a new DWORD called WriteProtect and put the value as 0 to disable write privileges to the USB port. To reverse the step, either delete the WriteProtect REG_DWORD or toggle the value to 1 which will enable the port.

Remember that the above trick works only with Windows XP SP2.

If you like to go a step further and disable users from connecting USB storage devices to their computers, here's the trick:

Open registry and navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services\UsbStor

Now in the right pane, double-click Start and type 4 in the Value data box (Hexadecimal) and quite the registry editor. To enable the USB storage devices, change the Start value back to 3.

No matter how good the protection tricks are, determined people always find workarounds. Here are some of the tricks that may render the above methods unusable:

» Employee may boot computer using a LiveCD like Knoppix or Ubuntu so the USB drives are again available to him for writing.

» They could open the computer chasis, take the battery out to reset the BIOS settings.

» Some may even invest in a PS2 to USB port converter.

» If he manages to get admin access for a temporary period (like installing software), he may undo the registry edits.

The cat-mouse game will never end. USB drives will remain a headache for the sysadmins for some time. However, Windows Vista will make life much simpler for IT administrators. There's a new Policy in Vista that allows USB keyboards or mouse to be used but not any USB devices.

Trust Rules

Whom can you trust? It's not an easy question to answer, yet it couldn't be more important to try. Hook up with the wrong crowd, and there goes a career--or worse.

As scholar Linda Stroh argues, trust is a prerequisite for effective management, and it contributes directly to personal success. To find out how to tell the "good guys" from the "bad guys," Stroh interviewed over three hundred people. The result is a thorough and invaluable compendium of lively stories, lessons learned in the trenches, and practical tools and principles. Readers will learn how to identify the trustworthy at work and in their personal lives--giving their careers a boost and helping them sleep better at night. That's because having trustworthy people around us makes organizational life much easier and less stressful.

Yet, since ancient times, people have pondered the issue of trust. How do we decide who to let into our inner circle? To what degree do trusting relationships impact our performance at work? What are the consequences of misplaced trust? Must trust be unconditional? Taking these questions out of the realm of the philosophers, Linda Stroh draws from her extensive research to highlight common themes and the hard-won lessons learned from experience. She then distills their thoughts and experiences into practical tools and techniques for assessing trustworthiness--including your own--and applying these tools in a variety of situations. Integrating insights from management and psychology, Stroh shows readers how to pay attention to red flags in relationships and ultimately develop a network of trustworthy people that will help them succeed in business and beyond.

Among other things, the book covers:
*The devastation that results when we trust too much;
*Why we need to "mistrust" as well as trust;
*When to use the book's checklist for assessing a person's trustworthiness;
*How to work with people we know are untrustworthy;
*Who deserves unconditional trust;
*When to give someone a second chance;
*How to be sure that you yourself are trustworthy.

Combining rigorous primary research with practical application, and using engaging stories and insights throughout, this book will help general readers, professors and students, and professionals alike attain their goals more quickly and with greater satisfaction.

Search using indexes

I asked my mentor for some sites where i can download mp3s easily. He asked me back what i intended to download, i told him i wanted to have the barney songs. He said "i don't like barney, its corny" So i was expecting that he would not help me find it. The next day around, he said to get my barney songs from his file storage. I was so happy that time, i thought it was nothing to him. I asked him where he found it, and using this

[.index+"type what you want to search"]

at the Google search of your browser, you can easily find music and etc.

Downloads

This is just a draft. I promised to post one for you. It's been taking a long time already. Though I don't know if you will find it helpful in its present form, here it is.

There are individuals and partners (several individuals) who maintain blogs that link to free downloadable files you might be interested in. They maintain blogs (like the Snake and the Dragon). Their files are stored somewhere else, not on their blogs. The linked file/s may or may not be theirs.

Other individuals share their files through torrents. You already know that so this tutorial will not delve on that topic.

Still others share their files through file hosting sites. Then they post their links in forums (fora is the correct plural form). Examples of these fora are:
1. stairway to heaven
2. http://avaxhome.ws
3. khm3r (already linked on the right column of this blog)

Examples of file hosting sites are:
Badongo
Bitroad
DepositFiles
DivShare
EasyShare
FileFactory
FileSend
Ftp2Share
GigaSize
Gigashare
IceFile
KewlShare
LetItBit
MediaFire
Megaupload
MiHD.net
Oxyshare
Paid4Share
Rapidshare
SaveQube
SharingMatrix
sms4File
SnapDrive
Swoopshare
Sendspace
Turboupload
UploadBox
UploadOk (.net, Vietnamese like)
Uploading
Up-File (.org, Arabic)
VIP-File
YouSendIt
Ziddu
4Shared (has its own search engine)

Note: Searching for files stored in RapidShare and MegaUpload. (There's a rapidshare search link in the right column, right?) Right-click to open in a new window and use for searching files from RS and MU. RS is not Rubber Soul, nor Ron Snake. MU is not Metal Unicorn, nor Multiple User. Got that?

Another note: You can also go to http://4megaupload.com to search for files stored in MU. Were I a girl in this life, we would be having MU.

Blogs
Google for blogs, e.g., "(keyword) blog"
keyword, or key phrase can be artist name, movie title, or the word mp3

I have already shown you how to Google for indexes (FTP Indexes or Dexes, for short).

There is a download tutorial for file hosts here:
BRA http://comobaixar.blogspot.com/
ENG http://hey-howto.blogspot.com/

Most of the time the files, especially movies, are archived in parts, e.g. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, etc. That is because most of the file hosts limit the size of the files to 100 MB max, for free accounts. If that is so, download them all then unarchive (unRAR, unZip) the first one. All the parts will be also unarchived automatically.

Sometimes the files come with passwords, mind you. You may end up with an archive that you can not open because you did not note the password. In that case you may use password recovery apps or try to go back to the site where you got the download link in order to get the password.

Words

Words are used when people try to represent reality, no matter how poorly we do. Words are processed in our brains to evoke sounds, scents, sights, and taste and touch.

Sometimes, words put us to sleep. Words enhance dreams. I prefer to mix my words with alcohol.

Words move us to action. Or inaction, take your pick.

Sometimes, words are lies. Some people use words that run counter to what is real, to hide reality. That is the reason why, though I am good at using words, I don't say things that much, because they are not real. I'm a teaser, i'm a joker. But I wouldn't lie. I'd rather be dumb than utter a lie, i'd rather be an illiterate than write falsehood.

Sometimes, words hurt us. Truth hurts. Reality hurts. Call me Nagger.

Happy night reading!

I Told Her To Sleep

10:00 pm, she was still awake & sent me a txt

y do i luv sleeping?
nt jst 2 satisfy my body's necessity.
nt jst 2 repay my debt slip
but 2 unhear my heart breaking,
atlist 4 a wyl,
iv hd a swit escpe
from lyfs bitter reality.

Angie Hart sang it for me, too. Here's So Mad by Frente!:

you’re sleeping i’m not sleeping and there’s miles of night
i see something shining where there is no light
i just want to bury it and throw away the weeds when they grow
what makes me so mad?
that scream to wake the birds is only my heart beating
what makes me so mad?
translucent skin i’m looking in i feel a ghost
scared away and left the one i need the most
i just want to bury it and leave my tears to sink in the grave
what makes me so mad?
the shouting in my room is only my heart beating
what makes me so mad?

the heart beat calls my name the pattern on my thumb
the waiting and the dream have all turned into one
you’re sleeping i’m not sleeping and i wonder why
i love to think about the time before the light
i didn’t want to bury it and lift my head up into the sky
what makes me so mad?
the bass drum through the floor is only my heart beating
what makes me so mad?
that scream to wake the birds is only my heart beating
what makes me so mad?

Meaning of Smile

Does smile mean happiness? And laughing gladness?

Do tears mean sadness? What then are tears of joy?

What then really is smile, when we can't read how others feel?

Sometimes a smile is a mask we wear to pretend we're happy;
to show people that we're okay. Hiding feelings felt inside.
But deep within, gosh nothing's alright.

Does crying mean sorrowfulness? That everybody presumes.
Thinking they perceive, thinking they know.

But pleasure sometimes can't be seen in smiles,
but in tears in the eyes.

That, then, is the meaning of a smile.

A Poem to Remember

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person,
Who isn't supposed to ever let you down, probably will.
You will have your heart broken possibly,
More than once and it would be harder every time.
You'll gonna break other hearts too,
So remember how it felt when yours was broken.
You'll fight with your best friend.
You'll blame a new love for things an old one did.
You'll cry because time is passing too fast,
And you'll eventually lose someone you love.
So take too many pictures,
Make more memories to remember,
Laugh too much as tears of happiness,
And love like you've never been hurt,
Because every sixty seconds you spend upset,
Is a minute of bliss you'll never get back.
Don't be afraid that your life will end someday,
Be afraid that it will never begin at all.

Live simply. Dream highly. Love generously.
Care deeply. Speak kindly and Leave the rest to God.

Password Cracking

Sometimes you want to know the log-in password for someone's Windows user account. You do not want to reset it, you want to know THE password.

Passwords of Windows users are stored in the SAM file (Security Access Management, maybe). Let me digress, 'I am Sam' is a very good movie. Also, I am SAM, Super as Master, if ever you ask Gugu. I am Gugu's Super Master, so I am SAM and GSM.

Now, back to the topic. The SAM file is located in Windows/System32/Config, and is named as SAM, of course. No file extension, just SAM. Passwords stored in the SAM are encrypted, or 'hashed', and are referred to as NT Hashes. While Windows is running, the SAM file cannot be copied, it is locked by the OS.

There is another location of the password hashes, in the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESAM, but this is also locked. A third possible location is on Windows/repair, but the passwords here may already have been replaced by new ones.

The process of getting the password from the hashes is called 'password cracking'. Like when you break something, it usually cracks. Cocaine is also called crack. The sexy part of human anatomy is also called crack. Gugu is interested in crack. That is why I like crack. I digressed again.

Again, to the topic. The more difficult part in password cracking is getting the SAM file which contains the NT hashes of the user passwords. The easiest way to get the SAM file is to boot the machine using a different OS, from the floppy drive, the USB drive, or the CD drive. Issues to be addressed in booting is the file system of the HD (most probably NTFS), and the size of the file.

After booting (using another OS), copy the SAM and SYSTEM files to another location (floppy, another folder in the HD, or another computer in the network). The SYSTEM file is another file located in the same folder with SAM (Windows/System32/config), and we will need it to crack SAM.

The SAM and SYSTEM files may then be read by a password cracker. We have used SAMINSIDE and PPA (Proactive Password Auditor).

Teacher's Crush with

When i sat down and began to open my account in Gmail and yahoo, i received a message from teacher. It said that he has a new crush, Guess what...the song titled "Breath" of Anna Nalick in You tube. They first heard this song on a radio last night with his daughter Chyla. Hes asking me to download it and i was surprised that i post it in here. When i heard the song, i found it nice and meaningful, soft and simple, specially the singer is pretty cute! The song has a high pitch, i like it. This time I'm looking for other videos and mp3s of Anna Nalick as what master requested in me.

Being Monitored

Sometimes, even though we rebelled against our parents because they never leave us alone, we miss the way they monitor us. Monitor == watched closely. Sometimes, it's nice to know someone watches our every move.

Enemies monitor us. But friends also monitor us.

Tiny Pups

One time, she would have brought one tiny pup with her from her parent's place, but worried where she would bring her home to. I said, "You should have brought the dog to me. I love tiny puppies."

All my favorite dogs at home were tinies, small ones with big eyes and long ears.

Next time, I know she'll give me a tiny. If not in this life, maybe in the next.

Downloading YouTube Videos

Sometimes, we want to download YouTube videos and save them in our hard disks. They stay there and add to all sort of jewels, nuggets, and junks we save from the internet.

Here is one tool to download the videos.

This one I have not tested yet. But the site claims that their service converts the flv file to mp4 during the download process.

Bjork

It seems that we haven't had music on the blog for so long a time. I made a very short playlist of some of Bjork's songs. If Gugu likes, we can move the playlist, with new color and new and additional songs, to the right column so that it will stay there even if new posts are made.

Every father should introduce Bjork to their daughters. Bjork's lyrics are simple but deep. "Alarm Call" is my daughter's favorite.

This playlist does not autostart, so click on the Play Button.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu is my favorite Action Star. I like to watch all of her movies, and the way she used her kung fu. I first saw her in the movie titled "Charlies Angel" which she looks like "Pokwang" the Comedy Actress here in the Philippines. [Laugh] Yeah thats true they're look a like, but lucy Liu is pretty than pokwang. i like her eyes most and the shape of her face which made me remember the cartoon character "mulan"

Elaine Lui

My new heroine:  Elaine Lui.

She is also known as Lui Siu Ling, family name first.  Also as Siu Ling Lui.

This photo is from one of her movies, Iron Angels (aka Midnight Angels, aka Angels, aka Fighting Madam, aka Angel, aka Tian shi xing dong).   There was also a sequel.  These Hong Kong movies were produced before Tarantino's Charlie's Angels.

Elaine's other famous movies are The Bride with White Hair (which also had a sequel), and The Red Wolf.

I'll try to find one of Elaine Lui's movies for my Gugu.

Sometimes, we want to require login before other users on the LAN may access our shared folders and documents.

To do that on Windows XP, we must disable 'Simple File Sharing.' Open Windows Explorer--Start>Run>Explorer, or just open My Computer, or any folder. On the menu, click Tools>Folder Options>View. Scroll down towards the bottom of the drop-down list under Advanced settings. Uncheck the box for "use simple file sharing."

Reboot.

Shawarma

Gugu-er, all i'm thinking about is food! But remember, i always remember. Aku mau makan, kuingat kamu!

Though she was not able to eat her lunch on time, Gugu bought shawarma for both of us. Heaven! That was good! She made kulit to have lots of hot sauce and garlic sauce. That was very nice of her.

I offered her coffee to go with her shawarma but she declined. Later in the day she got a bad headache.

I believe it was because she did not have her caffeine fix for the day. I must never allow her to be 'matigas ulo.' If she had drunk her coffee maybe she would not have had that headache.

She's so hard-headed and proud, she really is a Di Lung. I had been a successful Snake in turning her into a coffee addict. I should fix her coffee whenever she's around. That would be my responsibility for my Gugu.

Jalapeno

Jalapeno is named after the town of Xalapa in Veracruz, Mexico where it was traditionally grown.

The 'heat' of peppers are measured in Scoville units, ranging from 0 for bell peppers to 1,000,000 for the Naga Jolokia (grown in NE India). The Standard U.S. Grade pepper spray used for defense against thugs has an SR of 2,000,000 to 5,300,000. Pure capsaicin has a Scoville rating of 16,000,000. Hot!

The Jalapeno's SR is Medium, ranging from 2,500 to 8,000.

I love Jalapenos. I love Sili Labuyo. I love pepper. Hot! Hot! Hot!

Tea, Te, Tsa, Tsaa

Not really tea but.... This one looks tasty, but is very bland compared to Jasmine tea. It comes as a welcome break for the roundness and the bitterness in Oolong tea, which i like black.

There are red tea (mostly decaffeinated), white tea, green teas... i like mine black. There are herbals, fruities, limeys, spicies...

Once i gave Gugu a blackcurrant fruity black tea. I learned she almost choked. Will try again to introduce her to tea, starting with blander and milder flavors, later.

"We can never know about the days to come,
But we think about them anyway...

And tomorrow, we might not be together.

and stay right here...
'cause these are the Good Old Days."

The Imperfect One

Hahaha! Two posts in one night [lol]. These words describe me:

The Perfectionist
Dominant in relationships. Conservative. Always wants the last word. Argumentative. Worries. Very smart. Dislikes noise and chaos. Eager. Hardworking. Loyal. Beautiful, even charming. Easy to talk to. Hard to please. Harsh. Practical and very fussy. Often shy. Pessimistic.

Gugu-er, you r my bos.

Typing Speed Test

Almost a year ago I gave her an app to improve her touch-typing skills. I think she improved her touch more than her typing. That is the better scenario, I think. Still, I wish that she could further increase her typing speed.

This link I found in a Singapurian student's blog. The link sometimes gets hijacked by a gambling site, so be careful. [Or could be most of the time, i tried only twice]. Just close the new page/tab that opens if you notice anything unusual (i am suspicious of pop-ups):

93 words

Speed

Gugu-er, i cheated on the results, i only got 63 wpm on the first try. When i was in senior high school, 95 wpm was easy. Yoh!

Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

Know this: I die whenever u are troubled. I can feel it in my bones. And the pain comes from your sadness, not from my death.

You Are Your Best Friend

My best friend is myself
I don't need nobody else
to be there for me
care for me, and for my
best time is to be all alone
and just sit
thinking I'm in love with me

You might see a girl unhappy
but I could be a shining star
Feeling free in all my loneliness
You can always be my friend
but you can never be the one

My best friend is myself...

Heaven knows that life is magic
Heaven knows I'm not alone
I can see how you relate to me
You say you wanna be my friend
so maybe you can be the one

My best friend is myself...

So they say that I'm not laughing
well I do, I smile within
You're the only one to see through me
So if you wanna be my friend
I think that you can be the one

Entity Relationship, Words & Wushu

We translate reality into models, into programs, into codes and numbers, into words. Words are therefore not real and have meaning only in a limited way. Words are just models of reality. At best, they are just representations of reality, what we perceive as reality. That is why there will never be a perfect program. That is why every single word leaves a million left unsaid.

Draw an ERD for this: "I am a basket case, this is my therapy, Gugu is my shrink. I am also her mentor, this is our Wushu, she teaches me how to breathe and stay alive."

Hanging On Tight

I gave her this picture because it reminds me to hang on tight to friends, something which I have only a very few of, if I have any at all.  I hope we would still remain friends even if she becomes a cat and I a fish.

She loved this picture, and even wanted to have it as her wallpaper.  I gave her a list of titles and asked her to pick the best one for the picture.  I don't remember now if she picked a choice which she considered better than what I have named the jpg file.  For that matter I don't even remember now what name I have given to the file.

I often tell her she is my memory.  The picture file is stored somewhere in her hard disk.

They have a cat and a dog who are friends, like the ones in the picture.  Their dog is named Timothy.  She says it is a good name because it comes from the Bible, but I don't see the correlation.  And I tell her I have a brother who has the same name.  My brother is good to me, though.  Still, the dog, the name, and my brother are not related to the Bible, even if they are all good.
